Featured Case Study - Web CMS Migration & Globalization Project

Carestream originally contracted Falcon-Software to assist in a major CMS migration of over 300,000 documents, but quickly turned into wide variety of additional web-based contracts over a 24-month period. This included the development of a new public website, an Intranet portal site, multi-lingual site globalization and monthly support services. 

Client's Needs

1. Consult, develop and deploy a .NET CMS Intranet portal.
2. Integrate a new look and feel for their public website.
3. Display regional content based on the site visitors domain, language and country.
4. Provide a way to re-use small content elements and have them render based on the template.
5. Programmatic way to migrate 30,000+ pages of content using both automated and manual techniques.
6. Training for site administrators and content editors on how to maximize their investment with the new CMS system.

Project Challenges

1. Their existing website used many different templates and many different smart forms, which we had to migrate content from.
2. Provide a way to re-use content items on multiple pages without duplicating the content in the CMS system.
3. There are multiple web properties managed in the same content management instance. We had to figure out a method to migrate content in the shortest content freeze window so there was minimum impact to the other web properties content authors.

Falcon-Software's Solution

1. We inventoried the existing content, templates and smart forms and created a mapping of what content had to be migrated to the template/smart form, what content needed to be created from scratch and what content could be kept using the same smart form.
2. A QA site was set up where a migration script was run on existing content. That content was tweaked to ensure it fit with the new creative. The new content was created and translated in the production database as this content would have no impact on the live website.  When all new content was created, a content freeze was put in place and a staging site was set up using the production database.  Migration scripts were run to update existing content from the QA database to the staging database.
3. Two migration scripts were created and run at strategic points during the migration.
4. We converted content from old smart form structures into either no smart form or a new smart form structure and old template to new template.
5. Migrate content from one database to another database where the content ID existed in both databases.
