TECH TIPS: 301 REDIRECTS...WHAT? HOW? WHY?
In
order to further enhance web presence, many websites register
more than one domain name to point to their website. Falcon-Software
is no exception, we have falcon-software.com, falcon-software.net,
and
falconsoftware.com, among others, which all resolve to the
same
location, our company website. Recently, most of the major search engines have adopted new policies to
discourage this practice, and penalize websites which have multiple domain names that direct to the same
content. There is a way around this however, 301 redirects.
The number 301 refers to codes sent out be a web server to
advise a browser of the status of a web page. Anything in
the 200 range signifies a successful connection, anything
in the 400 range indicates that the requested page was not
found, et cetera. Response codes in the 300 range signify
that the web page still exists, but has been moved to another
location. The 301 redirect delivers this information and immediately
redirects the browser to that new location.
To use this functionality, first choose which one of your
domains you want to be the “primary” domain; the
domain to which all others will forward. The next step is
to configure the web server to redirect all other domains
to the primary one.
For example: if you go to:
www.falcon-software.net
You will notice that where you end up is actually www.falcon-software.com.
301 redirects can also be used to
redirect to a specific web page within a site.
For example: if you go to:
www.falconefx.com
You will end up at www.falcon-software.com/richmedia.htm.
